Did you know that the Xbox Series X/S supports eight controllers?
The iconic id Software shooter Quake II is returning and looks better than ever with an updated remaster available today on all major platforms. For those who play on the Xbox Series X/S or PC, it’s possible to bring seven of your most beloved players to play on one (hopefully) large screen.
The 10th of August marked the beginning of Quake Con which is the annual Iid-sponsored fan-centric event that features LAN parties as well as press conferences, games, and much more. To mark the beginning of this renowned event, id Software and Bethesda revealed the availability of the previously reported Quake II remake.
The game was first released in 1997. the game was released in 1997. II, released in the year 1997, was the sequel to the hugely popular Quake that was the first 3D-based first-person shooter ever created. The sequel changed the plot and settings by shifting the action to space and introduced the Strog, terrifying aliens that would later appear in subsequent Quake games, including the mediocre Quake 4. Although Quake II can be viewed as being overlooked by its multiplayer counterpart, Quake III Arena, the game is an enjoyable game that helped push graphics forward, particularly thanks to its strong support for a variety of older 3D graphics cards. Now, the original game has been restored and made available for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S Switch, as well as PC.
The first thing that jumped out at me when I was browsing the website on the store page for the game Quake II on Xbox — which is coming out as part of Game Pass–was the fact that it allows for eight players to split-screen. It’s not the first game to allow multiple players on a split-screen, but it’s very rare. How many games can allow the same number of players locally and even via eight separate rendered boxes on the same screen? Wild! It’s always nice to have the latest PC game that supports split-screen also.
Other features are included in the latest Quake II Remaster.
There’s also more to this remake. The bundle contains the first Quake II as well as it’s the N64 Version of Quake II, all of the original expansions and maps for multiplayer, and a brand-new campaign designed by MachineGames, which is the company that developed the modern Wolfenstein games.
Quake II remastered also allows 16 players to play cross play co-op online, Gyro controls with Nintendo Switch and PS4 and PS5, and widescreen displays and also includes “restored” cut content, including maps that have not been released.
